چکیده

Bleomycin (BLM) is an anticancer antibiotic isolated from the supernatant of Streptomyces verticillus culture [21]. The cytotoxic activity of BLM depends on generation of singleand double-strand breaks in DNA (for review, see [16]). Indispensable for this BLM activity is the presence of metal ions, specifically Fe2+. Fe2+ BLM complexed with O2 or Fe 3+ BLM complexed with H2O2 leads to formation of an active BLM molecule, HOO–• Fe3+ • BLM.

Physicians’ awareness in Yazd province about Biological Effects of ionizing radiation applied in radiological imaging procedures

Introduction: Ionizing radiation has long-term risks, especially cancer. Since physicians request radiological examinations for patients, they need to be aware of its benefit and also risks. The aim of this study was to assess the overall knowledge of physicians in Yazd province about the radiation risks associated with diagnostic imaging procedures. Material and Methods: In this descriptive ...

Comparison of therapeutic effects of intralesional injection of bleomycin and cryotherapy on common warts of hands and feet

Background and aim: Warts are the most common clinical presentation of human papilloma virus infection of human skin and mucosa. They are more common on hand, foot, face and genital area. They are benign skin colour lesions with different clinical forms. There is no specific treatment for them. In this trial the therapeutic effect of intralesional injection of bleomycin and cryotherapy on...

Drug sensitivity and some characteristics of a bleomycin-resistant subline of mouse lymphoblastoma L5178Y cells.

Cellular resistance to bleomycin is important in the treatment of neoplasms. However, the mechanism of bleomycin resistance has been not well investigated. The resistance may be attributed to alterations of membrane transport, binding to DNA or other cell components, an inactivating enzyme, and/or a DNA repair system. MIYAKI et al. have examined the binding of [11C]bleomycin to DNA in bleomycin...

The response of L5178Y lymphoma sublines to oxidative stress: antioxidant defence, iron content and nuclear translocation of the p65 subunit of NF-kappaB.

We examined the response to hydrogen peroxide of two L5178Y (LY) sublines which are inversely cross-sensitive to hydrogen peroxide and X-rays: LY-R cells are radio-resistant and hydrogen peroxide-sensitive, whereas LY-S cells are radiosensitive and hydrogen peroxide-resistant. Higher initial DNA breaks and higher iron content (potentially active in the Fenton reaction) were found in the hydroge...

Radiation hormesis and adoptive response induced by low doses of limiting radiation

Ionizing radiation has long been known to produce detrimental biological effects. Although these harmful effects are the results of high doses of exposure, some other maladies such as mutation and cancer seems  to be induced at low doses of exposure. In recent decades, however, some pioneer scientists have indicated that ionizing radiation like many other essential agents has toxic effects  ...
